Massage is widely used by the athletic population for a variety of purposes such as injury prevention, recovery from fatigue, relaxation, and to increase performance. Muscle soreness can negatively interfere with activities of daily living and sports performance. Post-exercise soreness, commonly known as delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), results from an inflammatory process caused by micro-tears in the muscle fibers during unaccustomed repetitive activity and/or eccentric contractions, but it has also been suggested that muscle soreness can occur without micro-trauma. Research states that some massage techniques can decrease the symptoms of DOMS, and help increase muscle recovery.
