Kamloops Naturopathic Doctor, Kayla Ruschkowski, ND uses cosmetic neuromodulators such as Botox for both the treatment and prevention of facial wrinkles. When considering which types of lines can be treated vs prevented, we must first consider the two types of wrinkles.

Dynamic vs Static Wrinkles

Dynamic wrinkles are lines which are made during facial expression. You may see them when you are surprised, angry, worried, or even concentrated. Raise your eyebrows up high like you are surprised and furrow your brow like you are angry. Those actions are done by the frontalis and procerus muscles, respectively. By modulating the nerve signal to those muscles, neuromodulators (aka Botox) can make those dynamic wrinkles disappear. Most people who receive cosmetic neuromodulator treatment are happy with the result in that they are still able to make facial expressions, but these expressions do not make dynamic wrinkles on the face.

Over time, dynamic wrinkles become static wrinkles. The lines that were previously only made while making expressions become continually visible on the face, even while the facial muscles are at rest. Cosmetic neuromodulators can prevent these type of wrinkles, and if they are already present, neuromodulators can prevent them from worsening.

There are still ways to treat static wrinkles after they have formed. The first thing Kamloops Naturopathic Doctor Dr. Kayla recommends is to receive cosmetic neuromodulator treatment to prevent them from worsening. Especially after repeated treatments, the static wrinkles will begin to soften. Research also supports the use of collagen supplementation to improve static wrinkle appearance (PMID: 35223163). Dr. Kayla notices a large quality variation so she advises her patients to use high quality products specifically formulated for the skin. Collagen induction therapies such as cosmetic acupuncture can also stimulate collagen formation within static wrinkles and reduce their appearance over time.
