WHAT IS CUPPING?
What is Cupping Therapy?
Cupping Therapy is an ancient technique that dates back thousands of years which was also
referred to as Hijama Therapy. It was a technique of healing that was used for both spiritual
and physical health; where the cups were used to bring out either evil spirits from the body or
bad fluids to support the body’s healing process.
Today there is multiple forms of Cupping Therapy including flash, dry, wet and massage
cupping. All these techniques utilize the same theory to create healing within the body. A cup
will use a vacuum mechanism to open the layers of tissue under the skin. The decompression
will separate the layers and create space within them. Once this occurs fluid will be able to flow
through this area which create a healing response to that area and the surrounding tissue.
When this response takes place there are a number of benefits that occur. The main and largest
benefits are pain mitigation and mobility enhancements. Since the layers open and create flow
within the tissue again they can start to function as normal tissue again. Therefore, cupping can
help also help with nerve entrapment and scar tissue remodeling.
Cupping therapy can also be used with movement to strengthen brain-body connection. When
a cup is placed on the skin it brings attention to that area within the brain. From there it can
increase awareness of where that body part is in space to the brain and are be able to have
more control of that body part and movements including it. So then cupping can also be used as
sensorimotor retraining and movement pattern training.
